Continually provide our students with cutting-edge technology as part of the Fort Atkinson Instructional Programming.
#Response DateAdditional comments on goal
.2/5/2008 3:48:00 AMWe need to be sure those teaching technology also understand grade level academic learning. Include the grade level experts in the planning to optimize learning.
.2/5/2008 2:08:00 PMIt's important and should be understood, but we need the training and money to implement. Let's not take resources away - student teacher ratio is more important.
.2/5/2008 4:08:00 PMAs a member of the technology committee, I do see exciting things coming our way, but this is also going to take time to implement. It means teaching in new ways for many instructors.
.2/5/2008 4:58:00 PMStaff will need support as well if we are to keep up with all of the newest trends in technology.
.2/5/2008 6:53:00 PMTechnology is certainly a part of our world, but in a crowded curriculum, maybe shouldn't take up as much time.
.2/5/2008 7:20:00 PMsometimes I think we are a little overloaded and forget that a child first should read, write and know mathematics
.2/5/2008 7:54:00 PMAre keyboarding skills expected at too young of an age developmentally?
.2/5/2008 9:28:00 PMI believe this is very important! However, time must be given for teachers to plan out activities with IMC directors. Flex scheduling is so important for this to happen! Without the ability to flex plan, we would not be able to meet the technology curriculum's needs. We also need to take into account that the more we expect our teachers to teach, the less time there is for activities that are imbedded in technology.
.2/5/2008 11:03:00 PMTime is a factor. There is not enough time in the school day to fit everything in. I need time to catch up with the technology that we already have.
.2/6/2008 3:05:00 AMVery important!!! Again...time to learn and implement this valuable technology.
.2/6/2008 8:45:00 PMSupport is needed if we are going to use cutting-edge technology. Maybe we need to have some teachers or technology staff that help create lessons, support lessons, or just are a go-to person for a teacher that has an idea. They could also help stimulate teachers to use the technology. If the teachers are expected to use the technology and do everything else, it may be too much for them at this point.
.2/7/2008 3:08:00 PMI think it would be great to be able to have a smart board for every grade level.
.3/4/2008 2:50:00 PMI am watched Smart Board lessons. They look very exciting, but does the cutting edge technology really improve our student's skills. Then is there time for staff to actually be trained and use these materials. Each new technology item should save time, but actually often demands new training and extra time. The new technology while interesting doesn't always improve our educational outcomes. We've bought a lot of software that doesn't get used. Ask the the IMC people about this problem.
.3/5/2008 6:33:00 PMthis is so important for so many of our children, including the ones who suffer from processing disorders!
.3/5/2008 8:57:00 PMSmart boards in elementary classrooms would be a big step in implementing this goal.
.3/6/2008 4:52:00 PMIf this is the case though, why is it that elementary school teachers only get cast away computers from high school and middle school? I have lots of pictures on my "new" computer of people I don't even know.
.3/6/2008 5:00:00 PMThis is an exciting one. My question is where will the money come from to do this? I think we really need attention given to the elementary level for this.
.3/6/2008 5:05:00 PMI would love to have smart board technology in my classroom. This technology is comparable to going to internet. It revolutionized how we teach and operate. Let's face it, our elementary kids are growing up in a technological society and we need to keep pace to prepare for the future as the future is now.
.3/6/2008 6:38:00 PMSeems like the High School gets all the new items and elementary left with their left-overs
.3/6/2008 7:02:00 PMI feel we would need a lot of training and support in order for this to be a realistic goal in our schools
.3/6/2008 7:26:00 PMneed training for teachers and the technology available in the classrooms as well as in the computer lab such as a Smartboard. It is a great tool with which to teach.
.3/6/2008 8:05:00 PMThe cutting edge technology needs to be linked to student learning though. Cutting edge technology for its own sake -- no -- I would list that low priority. But I think we should have a more even distribution of that technology in the district. How many smartboards do you see in the elementary schools?
.3/6/2008 8:33:00 PMStaff DEFINATELY needs to be inserviced as well. Oftentimes, the students know more than we do!
.3/6/2008 10:51:00 PMAs long as I also get training on how to use the technology too!
.3/17/2008 9:19:00 PMDoes it need to be "cutting edge", how about just plain workable. Cutting edge might sometimes be more complicated, expensive, etc. than necessary.
.3/18/2008 11:53:00 AMWe need to make sure it is worth while and the technology works and improves learning.
.3/18/2008 2:10:00 PMAgain this can be a benefit if implemented and evaluated properly over time. Money and time are going to become real issues in the very near future and I believe we better make short and long term decisions based on this. I know we need to be competitive, but we also have to be reasonable and responsible in how time and monies are allocated.
.3/18/2008 2:48:00 PMOnly if the technology is working. We struggle with keeping the technology working and useable. It is often frustrating when the technology we have does not work when we need it to.
.3/18/2008 4:17:00 PMHow will staff be inserviced on the same technology?
.3/19/2008 1:22:00 PMWe need to be sure to have technology that supports our efforts toward reporting. There have been real concerns with Just 5 Clicks and Edline. Now we want to integrate a reporting system that includes both a letter grade and a concepts learned. We've spent a great deal of time out of our classrooms to work on them. Do we have technology that will support the reporting?
.3/19/2008 1:50:00 PMI'd like to see what we currently have in better repair such as the mobile lab at the middle school.
.3/19/2008 7:20:00 PMI don't believe the District really has the resources, nor the intent to provide "cutting-edge" tecnology in instructional programming. I'd settle for about 5 steps below cutting-edge.
.3/20/2008 3:18:00 AMWho is going to train them on this cutting edge technology and will be trained in its use?
.4/7/2008 9:44:00 PMIt is important to stay up to date, yet "cutting edge" sounds like we need to stay ahead of all other schools. I think the terminology should be changed and the goal needs to be defined further. What kind of technology- for students/teachers/software/training?
.4/7/2008 9:56:00 PMI believe technology and the funding for technology has been allowed to be driven by one or a very few people. It's more than just computers and it should be based on what facilitates increased learning...not just on what is comfortable by one holding the funds. Technology money was taken from the buildings so it is essential that that money is used for technology that is wider than just computers.
.4/7/2008 9:21:00 PMMake sure this includes funding for training the staff in this technology and support for them as they begin to use it.
.4/8/2008 12:31:00 AMJust be sure the technology doesn't overshadow the curriculum and course goals. I think this should have included providing TEACHERS with the technology as well.
.4/8/2008 1:15:00 PMtechnology is not always the latest greatest electronic device - it may be advances in information delivery and/or equipment in other cocurricular areas. Computer technology costs can "eat" the curricular budget alive.
.4/8/2008 1:36:00 PMAdding more technology is expenseive and adding new courses may overload staff. Therefore, hiring new staff may be necessary.
.4/8/2008 1:03:00 PMtechnology means a lot of different things - not just internet and computers.
.4/8/2008 12:26:00 PMIt would be nice to have inservice time to bring in units that we use and actually work on technology ideas with someone who can help us.
.4/8/2008 3:02:00 PMMakes me hope the district will inservice teachers on technology!
.4/8/2008 4:21:00 PMwe do not HAVE cutting edge technology, but we could! we should look into grants
.4/8/2008 5:08:00 PMwe need supply classrooms with a few computers at the start to help those students who struggle some computer sites that help students get more practice and examples that are needed for their understanding
.4/8/2008 4:59:00 PMIf it is technology for technology's sack it will be a waste of money.
.4/8/2008 8:52:00 PMStudents are motivated by use of technology and the immediate feedback they get as a result of using technology. In the future, digital portfolios may well replace our "hard copy" portfolios. That is where businesses are headed now, particularly in larger markets. We could be ahead here (and attract even more students with our technological advances) with the results being improved academic performance, greater state dollars, and improved proficiency on state assessments.
.4/8/2008 9:06:00 PMWhat good is the technology if it isn't operational or the staff isn't trained in its use.
.4/8/2008 7:58:00 PMI have often found that students think that because they have had some word processing instruction and can email/chat that they know how to use a computer. I'd like to see our district required demonstration of competencies in some manner other than just course completion. For those who don't have the skills then obtaining them through the traditional school year or summer school should be required.
.4/8/2008 10:03:00 PMTechnology must be allocated to the core classes, not just Business Ed and Tech. Ed.
.4/8/2008 10:05:00 PMA. Must explain that technology is all-inclusive and not just "computers-machines". B. If we're not going to commit to "cutting-edge" in action and $ then drop the term!
.4/9/2008 4:10:00 PMI feel the district needs to clarify what is meant by technology so that all stakeholders understand that we are not just talking about computers and items that support computers.
.4/9/2008 7:33:00 PMWe need to have a stronger engineering and construction program.
.4/10/2008 1:16:00 PMNot grabbing this and running with it is a tragic error on the part of the district. As a teacher, if I knew a student could not read and I did nothing about it, I would be helping that student to commit occupational (and social) suicide for the rest of their lives. Yet, sending students into the workforce/social world without the necessary 21st century skills is currently an acceptable practice in many schools. They need 21st century skills in their education today as much as they need to learn how to read and write and do math. It is an ESSENTIAL! The district has an opportunity (and responsibility) to be on the front end of this change and to help guide what it looks like by taking this initiative today.
.4/10/2008 4:36:00 PMallocate funds according to need and number of students served (science serves each student at least twice - Biology and Science 9- and is a core area that is tested. Compare resources that go toward Art and Tech ed with those going to Science
.4/10/2008 6:13:00 PMTechnology is very important, but so is the money to support training, software, supplies, training, computer labs, and upkeep of computers.
.4/10/2008 7:09:00 PMMake sure that technology is working properly
